Dr. Robert J. Snyder Joins Podiatry Management as Editor-in-Chief

Podiatry Management Magazine is pleased to announce that Dr. Robert J. Snyder has joined the publication as its new editor-in-chief, effective immediately.

Dr. Snyder, DPM, MSc, MBA, CWSP, FFPM, RCPS (Glasgow), is the former dean, professor, and director of Clinical Research at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. He currently serves as professor, Cardiff University School of Medicine, Wales, UK. He is certified in foot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is also a board-certified wound specialist-physician.

“I’m honored to lead Podiatry Management at such a pivotal time for our profession,” Dr. Snyder says. “My goal is to make it the best-in-class publication in foot and ankle medicine, and to reach more podiatrists, as well as international colleagues and aligned specialties such as vascular surgery, infectious disease, and plastic surgery. Together, we will take Podiatry Management to the next level as the trusted source for clinical insight, practice excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration.”

CMS Releases 2027 MIPS Adjustments

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) payment adjustment information for the 2025 performance period, which determines adjustments to Medicare payments in 2027.

MIPS-eligible clinicians with a final score above 75 points will receive a positive adjustment; those scoring exactly 75 points will receive no adjustment; and those scoring below 75 points will receive a negative adjustment.

APMA is hearing that the maximum positive payment adjustment for 2027, based on a perfect score of 100 points, is 1.38 percent. While relatively low, as expected, this is slightly higher than the 1.05 percent maximum for the 2024 performance period/2026 payment year. The amount may change slightly following targeted reviews.

Study: Fast-Track Recovery From Total Ankle Replacements

Patients who undergo total ankle replacement may not need the long stretches of immobilisation that have traditionally followed the operation, according to a prospective study published in Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. In a single-arm study of 22 consecutive patients operated on between January 2023 and June 2024, a structured fast-track protocol built around early mobilisation, multimodal pain control and standardised discharge criteria allowed active ankle movement within a median of two days after surgery, assisted walking with crutches within three days, and discharge from hospital after a median stay of 4.5 days. Ankle function, measured with the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society’s Ankle Hindfoot Scale, rose from a median of 29.0 points before surgery to 68.0 points at discharge, a statistically significant median gain of 39 points.

High-Tech Wounds, Human Problems

What a Global Conference Revealed About the Future of Healing

We can image wounds with artificial intelligence, manipulate the wound microenvironment, engineer sophisticated tissue matrices, and deploy technologies that would have seemed unimaginable just a decade ago. Yet, despite these advances, one uncomfortable question remains: Are we getting better at treating wounds, or are we truly getting better at healing patients?

Walking away from the recent World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) conference held Sept 23-26, 2026, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I was struck not only by the breadth of scientific innovation presented but also by an equally important undercurrent woven throughout the program: the need to reconnect technological progress with the realities of the patient experience. Perhaps the next great advancement in wound care won’t come from what we put on a wound, but from rethinking everything that happens around it.

Partnering With Other Medical Providers

I’m interested in expanding my professional partnerships in my area. This is about establishing a network of complementary medical providers (not necessarily just DPMs) who can share information, make patient and/or supplier referrals when appropriate, and so on. Does anyone have any advice about how best to get started with this and anything I should consider as I go?

The Overlapping Epidemics

A 68-year-old man with type 2 diabetes and a healed plantar ulcer returns to clinic four weeks after a prolonged battle with wound closure. He mentions, almost in passing, that he “stumbled a bit” getting out of the shower last week. He didn’t fall, but for some reason, he mentioned it to me.

For most podiatrists, that near-miss barely registers alongside the more familiar checklist of diabetic foot surveillance: diabetes and co-morbidity management, shoes and inserts, activity level, neurologic and vascular status, education reinforcement, and nail and callus care. But the near-fall deserves equal evaluation and intervention consideration. Patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), especially those with a history of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) or partial foot amputation, carry a fall risk that rivals their ulcer recurrence risk. Treating these as two separate problems, managed by two separate conversations or even separate providers, misses an opportunity that sits within the scope of podiatric medicine: much of what protects the foot from breakdown also protects the patient from falling, and vice versa.

Podcast: Building Accessible Exam Spaces

“My recommendation is always to think through the healthcare experience through the eyes of the patient.”

August Boehnlein, marketing manager with Midmark Corporation’s medical division, brings an unexpected path to that work: He studied pre-med at the University of Dayton and interned with Midmark’s clinical affairs group before pursuing a career in healthcare marketing.

In this conversation with Daniel Williams, senior editor and host of the MGMA Insights Podcast, Boehnlein examines how medical practices can extend accessibility across the full patient experience, from entering the facility to transferring onto exam or procedure equipment. He also discusses evolving federal requirements for medical diagnostic equipment and practical steps practice leaders can take to identify accessibility gaps.
