Podiatric medicine lost one of its true founding fathers with the passing of Dr. Lowell Weil, Sr. If there is a Mount Rushmore of this profession, his face belongs on it, carved alongside the very few who didn't just practice this specialty but built it from the ground up. As past president of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and past president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and as founder of the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute, his fingerprints are on nearly every advance our field has seen—all while he found time to serve as team podiatrist for the Chicago Bears.

But what made him extraordinary was never the résumé. It was the man behind it….

Healthcare affordability is emerging as one of the defining anxieties heading into the 2026 midterms, as rising premiums, ballooning deductibles and even upfront payment demands reshape how voters think about their coverage.

UW Health has acquired University Podiatry Associates, a podiatry clinic located on the west side of Madison. The practice provides comprehensive podiatry care for a wide range of conditions, such as diabetic foot ulcers, arthritis, bunions, hammertoes and other deformities or injuries. The practice is staffed by four physicians, as well as support staff, who care for approximately 80-100 patients per day.

With chronic diseases consuming 90 cents of every healthcare dollar spent in the United States, the focus on how we care for patients has to change. 

Eighty percent of chronic disease is driven by lifestyle factors: what people eat, how much they move, the stress they carry, the communities they live in. Treating symptoms without addressing these root causes means people will keep getting sicker, and the cost of their care will keep rising. Health providers must invest in approaches that build stronger relationships with patients and their communities, and that address the conditions driving illness in the first place.
