The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. It includes slight reductions in conversion factors for qualifying and nonqualifying alternative payment model participants. CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule through September 14, 2026.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transitioned from a “futuristic concept” to being an integral component of contemporary medical practice. For podiatric specialists, especially those seeking to balance high-quality care with operational efficiency, AI offers a wide range of assistance. Its uses include enhanced clinical decision-making, streamlined administrative tasks, and improved patient outcomes.

Buried in many ambient documentation contracts is language permitting the vendor to use de-identified practice data to improve its models. Some practices are fine with that. The problem is agreeing to it without knowing, then explaining it to a patient later.

Ask three direct questions and get the answers in writing. Is our data used to train or tune your models, can we opt out without losing features and what evidence supports the accuracy figures in your sales deck? That last one is not academic. State enforcers have already gone after a health care AI vendor over unsubstantiated accuracy claims under deceptive trade practices law, and marketing numbers that cannot survive a follow-up question are a reason to slow down the purchase.
