Regence BlueShield Withdraws Modifier 25 Policy
After sustained advocacy from APMA officials, Regence BlueShield has announced that its Modifier 25 reimbursement policy will not take effect. The policy had been scheduled to begin on September 1 but now has been rescinded. APMA continues to urge its members to support these efforts.

Local versus National Reimbursement Policies
Q: Which policy is paramount, local or national?
A recent DME question asked about L3000 reimbursement, with the responder suggesting that the national policy does not cover them (except, as with Medicare, an integral part of a brace attached to a shoe). Hence, the carrier is correct in requiring recoupment after a post-payment audit for previous orthotic claims that were paid. Is that correct and can we always assume that is the case?
If the physician had obtained pre-determination of benefits that the orthotics would be covered, was the carrier’s initial payments a mistake or due to something else? Read Dr. Kesselman’s entire response at the link below.

“Rushed” WISeR Program Led to Errors
The rollout of a Medicare program that uses artificial intelligence to approve or deny care was hasty and error-ridden, according to more than a thousand pages of recently released documents and data.
The pilot program, called the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction model, or WISeR, launched in January and requires health care providers to seek approvals before they can provide certain procedures and products, like skin substitutes and epidural injections for pain management. The experiment operates in New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Washington and will run until 2031.
