Re: DPM Degrees: Dead End—Or Just a Start?
Dear Dr. Kesselman,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your words in response to the notion that our degree is a dead end. Your response was thoughtful, eloquent, and exceptionally well stated. I am in complete agreement.
At the end of the day, this world is what we make of it, and much of what we get out of life depends on what we are willing to put into it. All of us worked incredibly hard to become doctors, not simply to earn a living, but to give back to society through helping, healing, listening, and showing compassion to those who place their trust in us. At the same time, we strive to provide a good life for ourselves and our families. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

DPMs Invited to Participate in APMLE Survey
The National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners is looking for licensed and practicing podiatric physicians to participate in its Practice Analysis survey in April 2027 for the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Exams (APMLE).
The Practice Analysis serves as the foundation for identifying the content and competencies that should be included on the APMLE Part I, APMLE Part II, and APMLE Part III. It identifies the knowledge, skills, and tasks that are relevant to the current practice of podiatric medicine, and its findings inform the content of the exams.
A large group of licensed and practicing podiatric physicians must complete validation surveys to rate how often they perform specific tasks and how important those tasks are for safe patient care. By participating and completing the survey in April, licensed and practicing podiatric physicians will be sharing their knowledge and expertise on this incredibly important process—and helping advance the podiatric profession.

New Plantar Fasciitis Codes
Q: I have been receiving errors in my billing for commonly used code for plantar fasciitis this week and I imagine others are also dealing with this.
New as of 10/1/2026: General code M72.2 without laterality changes or specific fifth characters may be phased out or updated depending on exact annual coding guidelines; plantar fasciitis is transitioning to specific laterality codes like M67.A01 (right foot) and M67.A02 (left foot), leaving M72.2 strictly for true plantar fascial fibromatosis/Ledderhose disease. So, these codes may need to be built in your EHR or PM system.
A: IMPORTANT UPDATE!
The annual ICD-10-CM update took effect October 1, and FY 2027 brings several changes that are particularly relevant to podiatric medicine. Although the overall number of ICD-10-CM changes is substantial, the number of changes directly affecting podiatry is relatively limited.
The most important podiatry-specific changes involve plantar fasciitis and plantarfascial fibromatosis of the ankle and foot. These changes generally move ICD-10-CM toward greater anatomic specificity and, in several instances, laterality.

Beating the Competition
Most podiatrists know by now that it’s essential to have a social media presence and an updated website that features educational blogs. But if most everyone is doing that, how do you stand out in a field that is populated with competition from other podiatrists, orthopedists, physical therapists, chiropractors, pedorthists, retail outlets, and even nurse practitioners?

Join me in celebrating International Podiatry Day! (October 8)
Let’s appreciate the care provided by podiatrists to millions of Americans, saving limbs and lives. America may run on Dunkin', but Americans can stay running because of podiatry.
The more I work at American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the better I understand and value our members and the impact they have in their communities. Helping them advocate for themselves, their profession, and, most of all, their patients is truly meaningful work.
