AI Is Changing Healthcare. Is Podiatry Ready?

Re: DPM Degrees: Dead End—Or Just a Start?
Stating that you were hired as a casual contractor 31 years ago and you are in that same position perhaps says more about you in that you let it stay that way. Unless you put your name out there, ask for a promotion, show initiative, etc. in most business relationships you will be forgotten.
Did you really expect them to come to you asking if you would want something more? They may have seen you come and go, never asking more and thinking you were satisfied with your position. What would you have wanted? There are many people like that. There are many more who are not. But now you seem disappointed. So either you didn’t do your job, or they didn’t do theirs. Either this company is a bunch of buffoons for not recognizing all your efforts or you just dropped the ball.
For the remainder of this essay, I am going to put the blame squarely on you. But please accept my apologies if this is wrong and the company was a bunch of idiots who just didn’t recognize you. If that were the case, perhaps you should have left there a long time ago. Again, forgive me.

Donation Helps Western U. Expand VR Learning
Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine is expanding its virtual reality (VR) operating room thanks to a $500,000 gift from Dr. Bruce Lawrence and Mrs. Janet Lawrence.
“The Lawrence family is an extremely generous supporter of advancing education,” said WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine Acting Dean Jacqueline Truong, DPM, MPH, FACFAS, DABPM.
“We see an opportunity to change the course of podiatric education and advance it to the next level while optimizing patient safety at the same time,” Truong said. “This type of investment in the future of podiatric education and through our College specifically really helps our College be on the forefront. Our students benefit from these developments tremendously. They will achieve competency in a more innovative and integrated curriculum that meets them where they’re at.”

DPMs Invited to Participate in APMLE Survey
The National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners is looking for licensed and practicing podiatric physicians to participate in its Practice Analysis survey in April 2027 for the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Exams (APMLE).
The Practice Analysis serves as the foundation for identifying the content and competencies that should be included on the APMLE Part I, APMLE Part II, and APMLE Part III. It identifies the knowledge, skills, and tasks that are relevant to the current practice of podiatric medicine, and its findings inform the content of the exams.
A large group of licensed and practicing podiatric physicians must complete validation surveys to rate how often they perform specific tasks and how important those tasks are for safe patient care. By participating and completing the survey in April, licensed and practicing podiatric physicians will be sharing their knowledge and expertise on this incredibly important process—and helping advance the podiatric profession.
Survey respondents can learn more and sign up here.

PE 101
Private equity (PE) firms are actively consolidating the highly fragmented podiatry services market in the U.S. Since more than 96 percent of U.S. podiatry practices are small operations with fewer than five doctors, they make good targets.
By targeting small, independent practices, the PE firms can form large “supergroups” under Management Services Organizations (MSOs). This strategy centralizes administrative, billing, and IT tasks to improve scale and efficiency.
Selling to a PE firm or investors usually means an upfront cash payout, removal of burdensome administrative tasks, and the potential for a second payout (most PE firms and investors are usually in it for a short term).
